5. San Juan to Burgos
Burgos is one of the largest waypoints along the Camino with a population approaching 200,000. Rich in architectural jewels it was the home of the warlord El Cid and the seat of Franco's government until 1938. Burgos cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is famous for its vast size and unique architecture. Its construction began in 1221 and continued off and on until 1567. It was primarily built in the French Gothic style, and is a United Nations World Heritage site.
