1. St. Jean Pied de Port to Zubiri
The first stage of the trek begins at St. Jean Pied de Port, at the foot of the Pyrenees in France. Many pilgrimage routes from Europe converged here, the official start of the "French Way" or Camino de Santiago. Roncesvalles is the day one destination, a 16 mile walk over the Pyrenees through Basque country, a very scenic and tiring day. Zubiri, a small town with a population of 500, was the destination of day 2 of the walk on the Camino de Santiago.
